About this puzzle
Birds fluff up in the cold for a very practical reason. Raising the feathers traps a layer of air next to the skin, and that air warms up and works like a down jacket. A small bird like a robin can lose heat fast, so on a freezing morning it puffs out until it looks like a feathered tennis ball.
In this photo the robin perches on a thin gray branch that runs diagonally up the frame, with a couple of dry brown oak leaves hanging above it. Its orange face and breast and pale belly stand out against a soft wash of icy blue and white, and there’s no other detail to compete with it.
How to play
